Youth Entrepreneurship as a Tool in the Workforce Development Kit

Posted by Margaret Lamb - On January 12, 2010 (EST)

A video trailer for the film Ten9Eight was broadcast during the webinar. To view the trailer, click here: http://ten9eight.com/

The learning objectives for this webinar are:

  • Describe and demonstrate best practices in entrepreneurship education for young people (ages 11-22) from low-income communities.
  • Spark discussion with webinar participants about how these practices have been implemented in specific workforce development settings, how they are assessed and evaluated, how they are revised as a result of “real world” experience and evaluation, and how they might best be deployed in new settings.
  • Suggest ways in which entrepreneurship as taught and learned in school settings can be better connected with workforce development initiatives occurring in other settings—to create a unified and mutually reinforcing delivery system to upskill our young people and connect them fully to good job opportunities.

The speakers are senior officers of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), a 501-c-3 non-profit organization founded in 1987 in the South Bronx (NYC) to serve young people from low-income communities. NFTE today supports activities in primarily urban sites in 27 states (and also in 11 other countries). NFTE’s President & CEO, Amy Rosen, will co-host the webinar with Asst. Secretary Oates. Ms. Rosen is a nationally recognized expert in public school system reform strategies and the politics of transformational change. (She earlier spent 20 years working in the field of Transportation, gaining a reputation as an effective, entrepreneurial leader of urban transit systems). Ms. McKinney and Ms. Horn are veteran leaders within entrepreneurship education in Philadelphia and Miami respectively, and will provide specific examples of what works “in the field.”
