Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Reform Listening Session with the Labor Market and Workforce Information Producers and Data Users

Posted by Margaret Lamb - On March 04, 2010 (EST)

This Webinar listening session is to gather ideas and input from labor market and workforce information producers, data users, and other stakeholders about the role of employment statistics, labor market and workforce information in a reauthorized Workforce Investment Act (WIA). The critical questions for discussion in this listening session are as follows.

Overarching question -

What should a reauthorized WIA include or prescribe about data-driven decision-making and use of employment statistics, economic analysis, labor market and actionable workforce information to inform workforce development and investment decisions?
During this two-hour listening session, representatives from the stakeholder community will make very brief comments and respond to questions submitted via the Webinar’s chat feature. The telephone lines will be opened for additional discussion, comments, or questions. Additional discussion focus questions will also help to frame the discussion.

A) What are the most valued labor market data sets, workforce information, and economic analysis tools or approaches used to inform workforce development decision-making?

B) What are the information gaps?

C) What is the biggest challenge to providing access and assistance in using economic data and actionable workforce information to improve:

  • state and local workforce investment board investment decision-making?
  • One Stop Career Center provision of LMI data to business and to help individual career planning decisions?
  • the education system’s strategic investments in training courses?
  • the public’s benefit?

D) How should WIA be revised to:

  • provide missing data?
  • strengthen generation of new data?
  • improve timeliness?
  • promote its effective use by the workforce development and economic development systems, businesses, and job seekers?
